⚡ Getting Somewhere You’ve Never Been Before
Going somewhere new can feel stressful, especially when you need to arrive at a specific time.
You do not need to memorize the entire trip.
Plan the important parts before you leave, then follow the route one step at a time.
1. Confirm the Exact Destination
Before leaving, make sure you have the correct:
□ Street address
□ Building or business name
□ Suite, floor, or room number if needed
□ Appointment or arrival time
Do not rely only on the name of the place.
Different locations can have similar names.
2. Look Up the Route Before You Leave
Use your preferred map or navigation app.
Check:
- How long the trip should take
- Which roads or transportation you will use
- Where you need to park or get off
- Whether there are tolls
- Whether traffic or transit delays may affect the trip
If using public transportation, check:
□ Bus or train number
□ Station or stop
□ Transfers
□ Where you get off
3. Check the Final Part of the Trip
Getting to the address does not always mean you have arrived.
You may still need to find:
- Parking
- Correct building
- Entrance
- Elevator
- Office
- Check-in desk
For an important appointment, look at the destination beforehand and see whether there are special arrival or parking instructions.
4. Give Yourself Extra Time
For somewhere you have never been, plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early when practical.
Add more time if you expect:
- Heavy traffic
- Difficult parking
- Multiple train or bus connections
- A large building or campus
- Security or check-in
Do not plan around everything going perfectly.
5. Bring What You Need
Before leaving, check:
□ Phone
□ Wallet
□ Keys
□ Identification
□ Payment method
□ Appointment information
□ Anything you were told to bring
Make sure your phone has enough battery for the trip.
6. Start Navigation Before You Leave
Enter the destination while you are still somewhere comfortable.
Confirm that the destination shown is the correct location.
Then start the route.
If you are driving, set up navigation before the vehicle is moving.
7. If You Make a Wrong Turn
Do not panic.
Navigation can usually recalculate the route.
If you are driving:
Keep driving safely until you can follow the new directions or pull over somewhere safe.
Do not:
- Make a dangerous turn
- Suddenly cross several lanes
- Stop in an unsafe location
- Try to fix your phone while driving
A wrong turn usually costs a few minutes.
An unsafe correction can cost much more.
8. If You Get Lost
Stop somewhere safe if necessary.
Then:
□ Check your current location
□ Check the destination address
□ Restart navigation
□ Call the destination if you need help
You can say:
“Hi, I’m trying to get to your location and I’m having trouble finding the entrance. Can you tell me where I should go?”
9. If You’re Going to Be Late
If someone is expecting you and you can safely contact them:
Let them know.
“Hi, I’m on my way, but I’m having trouble finding the location. I expect to be about 10 minutes late.”
If you are driving, do not text or make a complicated call while driving.
Pull over safely or use an appropriate hands-free option.
