⚡ Making Returns & Exchanges

Need to return something you bought?

Before heading to the store or shipping anything back, check the return policy, gather what you need, and know whether you want a refund, replacement, or exchange.

A few minutes of preparation can save you an unnecessary trip.

1. Check the Return Policy

Find out:

□ How long you have to return the item
□ Whether you need the receipt
□ Whether the item must be unused or unopened
□ Whether tags or original packaging are required
□ Whether the item can be returned to a store
□ Whether there is a return shipping fee
□ Whether you will receive a refund or store credit

Look at:

  • Receipt
  • Store website
  • Order confirmation
  • Your online account

Check the deadline first.

2. Decide What You Want

Do you want a:

  • Refund
  • Different size
  • Different color
  • Replacement
  • Store credit

Knowing what you want makes the return easier.

3. Gather Everything

Before leaving home or packing the return, gather:

□ Item
□ Receipt or proof of purchase
□ Original packaging, if required
□ Tags, accessories, or parts
□ Payment card used for purchase, if needed
□ Order number for online purchases

Check that you are returning the correct item.

4. Returning Something to a Store?

Bring the item and your return information to the appropriate customer service or checkout area.

You can say:

“Hi, I’d like to return this item.”

or:

“I’d like to exchange this for a different size.”

If they ask why, answer simply and accurately.

5. Returning Something by Mail?

Start the return through the company’s website or instructions.

You may need to:

  1. Select the item being returned
  2. Choose the reason
  3. Choose refund or replacement
  4. Print or receive a return label
  5. Package the item
  6. Drop it off at the approved location

Use the return address or label provided by the company.

6. Before Shipping the Return

Check:

□ Correct item is inside
□ All required parts are included
□ Package is securely closed
□ Correct return label is attached
□ Old shipping labels are removed or covered

If appropriate, take a quick photo of the item and package before sending it.

7. Keep Your Return Receipt

For a mailed return, save:

  • Drop-off receipt
  • Tracking number
  • Return confirmation

For an in-store return, save the return receipt until the refund appears.

Do not throw away your proof just because you handed over the item.

8. Check Your Refund

Refunds may not appear immediately.

Check:

  • Original payment method
  • Store account
  • Gift card balance

If the expected refund does not appear within the time the business gave you, contact customer service.

Have your:

  • Receipt
  • Order number
  • Return tracking
  • Return confirmation

ready.

9. If the Store Says No

Stay calm and ask:

“Can you explain why the return can’t be accepted?”

Then check whether the issue involves:

  • Return deadline
  • Missing receipt
  • Item condition
  • Final-sale item
  • Missing packaging
  • Store policy

You can also ask:

“Are there any other options available?”

Depending on the policy, an exchange or store credit may still be possible.

At a store:

“Hi, I’d like to return this item. I have the receipt here.”

For an exchange:

“I’d like to exchange this for a different size. Is that possible?”

If there is a problem:

“Can you explain the return policy and what options I have?”

A return is not completely finished until you have received the refund, replacement, exchange, or store credit you were expecting. Keep your receipt and tracking information until everything is settled.
