⚡ Basic Technology Troubleshooting
When a phone, computer, app, or website stops working, the problem is often temporary and can be fixed with a few basic steps.
Use this guide to work through the problem safely before paying for repairs or replacing your device.
First: Stop and Read the Screen
Before selecting anything:
- Read the full message on the screen.
- Take a screenshot or photo of the error.
- Write down what you were doing when the problem started.
- Save any work you can still access.
- Avoid repeatedly pressing buttons.
An exact error message is much more useful than saying, “It doesn’t work.”
Do not call a phone number or download software from a pop-up claiming that your device is infected. Close the message if you can and ask someone you trust for help.
Step 1: Check the Simple Things
Look for an obvious cause:
- Is the device turned on?
- Is the battery charged?
- Is the charging cable connected securely?
- Is the volume turned up?
- Is airplane mode turned off?
- Is Wi-Fi or cellular service connected?
- Are cables fully connected?
- Is the correct app or window open?
- Is anything covering the camera, microphone, or speaker?
If you are using an accessory, such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, or headphones, make sure it is powered on and connected.
Step 2: Wait a Moment
Sometimes a device or app needs time to finish a task.
- Wait 30 to 60 seconds.
- Look for a spinning circle, progress bar, or loading message.
- Do not keep selecting the same button.
- If the device is installing an update, allow it to finish.
Turning off a device during an update can create additional problems.
Step 3: Close and Reopen the App
If only one app or program is having trouble:
- Save your work if possible.
- Close the app completely.
- Wait a few seconds.
- Open the app again.
- Try the task one more time.
If the app is frozen and will not close normally, use your device’s app switcher, task manager, or force-close option.
You may lose unsaved work when forcing an app to close.
Step 4: Check the Internet Connection
If a website, email, video, or online app is not working:
- Look for the Wi-Fi or cellular symbol.
- Open a different website or app.
- Check whether another device can connect.
- Turn Wi-Fi off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Move closer to the router.
- Restart the router only if you have permission and know which device it is.
If other websites work, the original website may be temporarily unavailable.

Step 5: Restart the Device
Restarting safely closes active programs and clears many temporary problems.
- Save your work.
- Open the device’s power menu.
- Select Restart.
- Wait for the device to turn back on completely.
- Reopen the app or website.
- Try the task again.
Choose Restart rather than forcing the device off whenever possible.
Step 6: Check for Updates
An outdated app or operating system may stop working correctly.
- Open your device’s settings or official app store.
- Look for available system or app updates.
- Connect the device to power.
- Install updates from the official source.
- Restart the device if requested.
Avoid update links that arrive through unexpected pop-ups, emails, or text messages.
Step 7: Check the Storage Space
A device may slow down or stop saving files when its storage is almost full.
Look in your device’s settings for Storage or Device Storage.
If space is low:
- Empty the trash or recently deleted folder.
- Remove downloads you no longer need.
- Delete apps you recognize and no longer use.
- Move photos or videos to trusted storage.
- Restart the device.
Do not delete files you do not recognize. They may be needed by the device or another program.
Step 8: Check Permissions and Settings
If a feature is not working, the app may not have permission to use it.
Check whether the app is allowed to access:
- Camera
- Microphone
- Photos
- Files
- Contacts
- Location
- Notifications
- Bluetooth
Only allow permissions that make sense for what the app does.
Also check whether Do Not Disturb, airplane mode, battery-saving mode, or another setting is limiting the feature.
Step 9: Try to Identify Where the Problem Is
Ask:
- Is only one app affected?
- Are several apps affected?
- Is only one website affected?
- Does the problem happen on another device?
- Does it happen on both Wi-Fi and cellular service?
- Did the problem begin after an update or new installation?
- Is an accessory causing the problem?
Testing one change at a time helps you identify the cause.
For example, if a website works on your phone but not your computer, the problem is probably with the computer or its browser—not the website itself.
Step 10: Use a Safe Alternative
If you need to complete something immediately, you may be able to:
- Use a different browser.
- Use another trusted device.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular service.
- Use the organization’s official app instead of its website.
- Call the person or business using a verified phone number.
- Save your work and return to the task later.
Do not use a public or shared device for banking, medical portals, or other sensitive accounts unless absolutely necessary.
If the Device Is Completely Frozen
- Wait at least one minute.
- Try closing the frozen app.
- Try opening the power menu.
- If nothing responds, press and hold the power button until the device turns off.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Turn the device back on.
A forced shutdown should be a last resort because unsaved work may be lost.
Stop Troubleshooting If You Notice
- Smoke, sparks, or a burning smell
- A device or battery that is extremely hot
- A swollen or damaged battery
- Liquid inside the device
- A cracked or exposed power cable
- Repeated electrical noises
- A request to pay money to remove a virus
- Someone asking for remote access to your device
- A request for passwords or verification codes
Unplug the device if it is safe to do so. Do not continue charging or using a damaged battery or cable.
Before Asking for Help
Gather this information:
- Type of device
- Device brand and model, if known
- Name of the app or website
- Exact error message
- What you were trying to do
- When the problem started
- What changed recently
- Troubleshooting steps you already tried
- Screenshots or photos of the problem
Do not send passwords, verification codes, banking details, or other sensitive information to someone offering technical support.
Quick Troubleshooting Order
Try these steps in order:
- Read and record the error.
- Check power, cables, volume, and connections.
- Wait briefly.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Check the internet.
- Restart the device.
- Check for official updates.
- Check storage space.
- Review permissions and settings.
- Ask for help if the problem continues.
Change only one thing at a time. After each step, check whether the problem is fixed before moving to the next one.
