Updates and downloads help your phone, tablet, or computer work properly—but it is important to make sure you are getting them from a safe source.

Use this guide when you need to update your device, download a file, or install a new app or program.

Before You Begin

Make sure:

• Your device is connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network.
• Your battery is charged or the device is plugged in.
• You have enough storage space.
• You know what you are downloading and why you need it.
• Important files are saved or backed up before a major system update.

Avoid starting a large update when you need to use the device immediately. Some updates can take several minutes or longer to finish.

Updating Your Phone, Tablet, or Computer

Whenever possible, install updates through your device’s settings.

On a Phone or Tablet

1. Open Settings.
2. Look for Software Update, System Update, or General.
3. Select Check for Updates.
4. Review the information shown.
5. Select Download and Install if the update is legitimate.
6. Keep the device plugged in until the update finishes.

On a Computer

1. Open the computer’s Settings.
2. Find Windows Update, Software Update, or a similar option.
3. Select Check for Updates.
4. Review the available updates.
5. Save your work and close important programs.
6. Select Download, Install, or Restart when ready.

Your device may restart several times. Do not turn it off while the update is being installed.

Updating an App

The safest way to update an app is through your device’s official app store.

1. Open the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Microsoft Store, or another official store included with your device.
2. Search for the app or open the store’s Updates section.
3. Confirm that the app name and developer are correct.
4. Select Update.
5. Wait for the update to finish before opening the app.

Some apps update automatically. You may be able to turn automatic updates on or off in your device or app-store settings.

Installing a New App

Before installing an app:

1. Decide whether you really need it.
2. Search for it in your device’s official app store.
3. Confirm the app’s name and developer.
4. Read its description and recent reviews.
5. Check what information and permissions it requests.
6. Review whether it is free, paid, or includes a subscription.
7. Select Get, Install, or Buy only when you are comfortable proceeding.

An app may be free to download but still charge for subscriptions or in-app purchases.

Check the App’s Permissions

An app may ask for permission to use parts of your device, such as:

• Camera
• Microphone
• Photos and files
• Contacts
• Location
• Notifications
• Bluetooth
• Calendar

Ask yourself whether the permission makes sense.

For example, a video-calling app may need access to your camera and microphone. A basic calculator probably does not need your contacts or precise location.

Choose Don’t Allow if a permission seems unnecessary. You can usually change permissions later in your device’s settings.

Downloading a File Safely

Before downloading a document, photo, program, or other file:

1. Confirm that you trust the website or person sending it.
2. Check the filename before opening it.
3. Make sure the file is the type you expected.
4. Avoid advertisements designed to look like download buttons.
5. Scan the file with your device’s security software when available.
6. Open it only after you are confident it is safe.

Common document and image file types include:

• .pdf
• .docx
• .xlsx
• .jpg
• .png

Be especially cautious with unexpected program files, compressed folders, or files that ask permission to make changes to your device.

Warning Signs of an Unsafe Download

Stop if:

• A pop-up claims your device is infected and demands an immediate download.
• A website displays several different Download buttons.
• The name of the app or developer is misspelled.
• The app has very few reviews or many complaints about scams.
• A file arrives unexpectedly from someone you do not know.
• The download asks you to disable security settings.
• You are told to install an app so someone can remotely control your device.
• The app requests permissions unrelated to what it does.
• You feel pressured to act immediately.

Close the page without downloading anything if something feels wrong.

If an Update or Installation Is Stuck

Try these steps:

1. Wait a few minutes. Large downloads may take time.
2. Check your Wi-Fi connection.
3. Make sure your device has enough storage space.
4. Confirm that the battery is charged.
5. Close and reopen the app store.
6. Restart the device.
7. Return to the official store or device settings and try again.

Do not repeatedly press the Install or Download button. This can sometimes create several download attempts.

If You Installed Something Suspicious

1. Disconnect from the internet if you believe someone may have remote access.
2. Do not enter passwords, payment information, or personal information.
3. Close the suspicious app or program.
4. Uninstall it through your device’s settings.
5. Run a security scan if your device provides one.
6. Change important passwords using a different trusted device if you entered them.
7. Check financial accounts if you shared payment information.
8. Ask a trusted person or qualified technician for help.

Quick Safety Check

Before selecting Download, Install, or Update, ask:

• Am I using the official app store or device settings?
• Do I recognize the app, file, website, or sender?
• Is the developer’s name correct?
• Do the requested permissions make sense?
• Is there a purchase or subscription involved?
• Am I being pressured or frightened into downloading something?
