⚡ What to Do When Your Device Is Running Slowly
A slow phone, tablet, or computer does not always need to be repaired or replaced. The device may simply need to finish a task, close unused apps, restart, update, or free some storage space.
Use this guide to try the safest solutions first.
First: Identify What Is Slow
Ask:
- Is the entire device slow?
- Is only one app or program slow?
- Is only the internet slow?
- Did the problem start suddenly?
- Did it begin after installing an app or update?
- Does the device feel unusually hot?
- Is the storage almost full?
- Is an update, backup, or download currently running?
If websites and videos are slow but other parts of the device work normally, the problem may be your internet connection rather than the device.
Step 1: Wait a Few Minutes
Your device may be working on a large task in the background, such as:
- Installing an update
- Downloading a file
- Backing up photos
- Scanning for security problems
- Organizing files
- Starting several apps
- Synchronizing email or cloud storage
Look for a progress bar, spinning symbol, or update message. Let the task finish before turning off the device.
Step 2: Save Your Work
Before closing apps or restarting:
- Save open documents.
- Finish or pause important downloads.
- Make sure photos or files have finished uploading.
- Write down anything you may need to reopen.
Unsaved work may be lost when an app closes or the device restarts.
Step 3: Close Apps and Browser Tabs
Too many open apps or tabs can use the device’s memory.
- Close apps you are not using.
- Close unnecessary browser tabs.
- Stop videos or music playing in the background.
- Pause large downloads.
- Keep only the app needed for your current task open.
Closing an app does not normally delete your account or files.
Step 4: Restart the Device
Restarting clears temporary problems and closes background processes.
- Save your work.
- Open the device’s power menu.
- Select Restart.
- Wait for the device to turn back on completely.
- Open one app at a time.
- Check whether the device is faster.
Choose Restart rather than forcing the device off whenever possible.
Step 5: Check the Internet Connection
If the problem happens mainly while browsing websites, streaming videos, sending messages, or using online apps:
- Try a different website or app.
- Check another device on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Move closer to the router.
- Turn Wi-Fi off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Restart the router if all connected devices are slow.
If only online activities are affected, troubleshooting the Wi-Fi connection may solve the problem.
Step 6: Check the Storage Space
Devices often slow down when storage is nearly full.
Open Settings and look for Storage, Device Storage, or Disk Space.
If storage is low:
- Empty the trash or recently deleted folder.
- Remove downloads you no longer need.
- Delete apps you recognize and no longer use.
- Move photos and videos to trusted storage.
- Clear offline movies, music, or podcasts you no longer need.
- Restart the device after freeing space.
Do not delete system files or anything you do not recognize.
Step 7: Check for Updates
Updates can correct problems and improve security or performance.
- Connect the device to power.
- Open the device’s settings.
- Check for an official system update.
- Open the official app store.
- Update the apps you regularly use.
- Restart the device if requested.
Install updates only through your device’s settings or official app store. Do not use unexpected pop-ups or advertisements offering to “speed up” your device.
Step 8: Remove Apps You Do Not Need
An unused app may continue working in the background.
Before removing an app:
- Make sure you recognize it.
- Confirm that you no longer need it.
- Check whether it contains files or information you need to save.
- Make sure you know your login information if you may reinstall it later.
- Uninstall it through your device’s settings.
Do not remove security software, device utilities, or system apps unless you understand what they do.
Step 9: Review Apps That Start Automatically
On a computer, some programs open every time the device starts.
Look in Settings for Startup Apps, Login Items, or a similar option.
Turn off automatic startup only for programs you recognize and do not need immediately. This does not uninstall the program; it only stops it from opening automatically.
Avoid changing unfamiliar system services.
Step 10: Check for Security Problems
A sudden slowdown may be caused by unwanted software, especially if you also notice:
- Frequent pop-ups
- New apps you did not install
- A changed homepage or search engine
- Unexpected advertisements
- The browser opening unfamiliar pages
- Unusual battery drain
- High data use
- Security settings being turned off
Run a scan using the trusted security tools already included with your device or software you intentionally installed.
Do not download a cleaner or antivirus program from a pop-up claiming that your device is infected.
Step 11: Check for Overheating
A device may slow itself down when it becomes too hot.
If the device feels very warm:
- Stop using it for a few minutes.
- Disconnect it from the charger.
- Close demanding apps, games, or videos.
- Move it out of direct sunlight.
- Place it on a hard, dry surface with airflow.
- Allow it to cool naturally.
Do not place a hot device in a refrigerator or freezer.
Stop using the device if it becomes extremely hot, smells unusual, or has a swollen battery.
Step 12: Test One App at a Time
After restarting:
- Open the app you use most often.
- Check whether it works normally.
- Open another app.
- Notice when the slowdown begins.
If the device becomes slow only when one app is open, that app may need to be updated, reinstalled, or replaced.
Before reinstalling an app, make sure important information is backed up and you know your login details.
Avoid “Speed Booster” and “Cleaner” Pop-Ups
Be cautious of programs that promise to:
- Instantly speed up your device
- Clean thousands of problems
- Repair your computer with one click
- Remove viruses after immediate payment
- Provide support through remote access
These programs may be unnecessary, misleading, or harmful.
Use the maintenance and security tools already included with your device whenever possible.
When to Ask for Help
Ask a trusted person or qualified technician for help if:
- The device remains slow after restarting and updating.
- It frequently freezes or shuts down.
- The storage is full but you do not know what can be deleted.
- You hear clicking, grinding, or unusual noises.
- The device becomes extremely hot.
- The battery appears swollen.
- Important files are missing.
- You suspect unwanted software.
- The device is no longer receiving security updates.
Back up important files before having the device repaired whenever possible.
Information to Bring When Getting Help
Write down:
- Device brand and model
- Approximate age of the device
- When the slowdown began
- Apps affected
- Error messages
- Recent updates or installations
- Amount of available storage
- Steps you already tried
Do not give a repair person your passwords unless access is genuinely necessary and you understand how they will be used.
Quick Slow-Device Checklist
Try these steps in order:
