⚡ What to Do When Your Phone or Computer Is Out of Storage
When a phone or computer runs out of storage, it may become slow, stop taking photos, refuse to install updates, or prevent you from downloading and saving files.
Use this guide to free space without accidentally deleting something important.
Before You Delete Anything
Pause and check:
- Are important photos and documents backed up?
- Is the item saved anywhere else?
- Is the device connected to cloud storage?
- Would deleting the item remove it from other connected devices?
- Do you recognize the file or app?
- Could someone help you review unfamiliar items?
Do not delete anything you do not recognize. System files and unfamiliar folders may be necessary for the device to work.
Step 1: Check What Is Using the Space
Open your device’s Settings and look for:
- Storage
- Device Storage
- General
- Disk Space
- Storage Management
The device may divide its storage into categories such as:
- Photos and videos
- Apps
- Documents
- Downloads
- Messages
- Music
- System files
- Other
Start with the largest category you understand.
Step 2: Empty the Trash or Recently Deleted Folder
Deleting an item may move it to a temporary folder instead of immediately freeing the space.
Check:
- Recently Deleted in your photo app
- Trash or Recycle Bin on your computer
- Trash in your file manager
- Deleted Items in cloud storage
- Trash inside individual apps
Review the items before permanently deleting them. After emptying the trash, recovery may be difficult or impossible.
Step 3: Review the Downloads Folder
Downloads may contain old documents, duplicate files, installation files, and items you needed only once.
- Open Files, File Explorer, Finder, or your file manager.
- Open Downloads.
- Sort by size or date if possible.
- Open unfamiliar files before deciding.
- Delete items you are certain you no longer need.
- Empty the trash afterward.
Keep tax records, medical information, legal documents, receipts, warranties, and other important records unless they are safely stored somewhere else.
Step 4: Remove Unneeded Photos and Videos
Videos usually use more space than photos.
Start by reviewing:
- Accidental photos
- Blurry photos
- Duplicate pictures
- Screenshots you no longer need
- Old screen recordings
- Downloaded videos
- Videos received through messages
- Several versions of the same image
Before deleting important photos or videos, confirm that they are backed up and can be opened from the backup.
Do not assume that cloud storage is a separate copy. If synchronization is turned on, deleting a photo from one device may delete it from the cloud and your other connected devices.
Step 5: Remove Offline Entertainment
Movies, television episodes, music, podcasts, audiobooks, and maps downloaded for offline use can take up significant space.
Open the app that downloaded the content and remove items you no longer need offline.
Removing a download usually does not cancel your account or purchase. You may be able to download the item again later.
Step 6: Uninstall Apps You No Longer Use
- Open your device’s storage or app settings.
- Sort apps by size or last used, if available.
- Identify apps you recognize and no longer need.
- Check whether the app contains files or saved information.
- Make sure you know your login details.
- Uninstall or delete the app.
Some devices provide an Offload or Archive option. This removes the app while keeping certain documents or account information for later use.
Do not remove security software, device utilities, accessibility tools, or system apps unless you understand what they do.
Step 7: Review Message Attachments
Photos, videos, voice messages, and documents sent through text or messaging apps may be stored on your device.
Look in the app’s storage settings for:
- Large attachments
- Photos
- Videos
- Documents
- Voice messages
- Old conversations
Save anything important before deleting it.
Deleting a conversation may remove the entire message history, not just its attachments.
Step 8: Remove Duplicate Files
You may have several copies of the same:
- Photo
- Document
- Download
- Email attachment
- Video
- Scanned form
Compare filenames, dates, and contents before deleting duplicates. Keep the most complete or recent version.
If your device offers a duplicate-detection feature, review its suggestions instead of approving everything automatically.
Step 9: Clear Temporary Files Safely
Some devices and apps allow you to clear:
- Temporary files
- Browser cache
- Website data
- App cache
- Completed update files
Use the cleanup tools included with your device.
Clearing browser data may sign you out of websites or remove saved preferences. Make sure you know important passwords before continuing.
Avoid advertisements and pop-ups offering to clean or speed up your device.
Step 10: Move Files Somewhere Safe
Instead of deleting important files, you may be able to move them to:
- A trusted cloud-storage account
- An external hard drive
- A USB flash drive
- A memory card, if supported
- Another computer
- A secure backup service
After moving files:
- Open several files from the new location.
- Confirm that they transferred correctly.
- Make sure the backup is complete.
- Only then consider deleting the originals.
For important files, keeping more than one backup is safer than relying on a single device.

If You Need Space Immediately
To quickly create enough room for a photo, update, or important download:
- Empty Recently Deleted or Trash after reviewing it.
- Remove one or two large videos you have safely backed up.
- Delete offline movies or podcast episodes.
- Remove an unused game or large app.
- Clear completed downloads.
- Restart the device.
Avoid rushing through large groups of photos or important documents.
Things You Should Not Delete
Do not delete:
- Files you do not recognize
- System folders
- Recovery files
- Important personal documents without a backup
- Photos or videos you want to keep
- Password records without a secure replacement
- Files belonging to another person
- Work or school files without permission
- Apps needed for safety, accessibility, banking, or medical care unless you have another way to access them
If you are unsure, leave the item alone and ask for help.
Be Careful With Cloud Storage
Cloud storage can work in different ways.
It may:
- Store a separate backup
- Synchronize changes between devices
- Keep only a smaller copy on the device
- Remove local files after uploading them
- Delete a file everywhere when it is deleted in one place
Before deleting anything, check whether the service says Backup, Sync, Optimize Storage, or Free Up Space. These options do not all work the same way.
Avoid Fake Storage Warnings
A real low-storage warning usually comes from your device’s settings or operating system.
Be suspicious if a website or pop-up:
- Says your storage is dangerously full
- Demands immediate payment
- Tells you to download a cleaner
- Claims to find thousands of problems
- Asks for remote access
- Requests your password or payment information
Close the page and check storage directly through your device’s settings.
When to Ask for Help
Ask a trusted person or qualified technician for help if:
- You cannot identify what is using the space.
- The System or Other category is unusually large.
- Important files are not backed up.
- You are unsure how cloud synchronization works.
- Storage fills up again immediately.
- You cannot install an important security update.
- You think files are missing.
- The device continues to report full storage after cleanup.
Do not provide passwords or verification codes to an unexpected person offering technical support.
Quick Storage-Cleanup Order
Work through these steps:
- Check what is using the storage.
- Confirm important files are backed up.
- Empty Recently Deleted or Trash.
- Review Downloads.
- Remove unwanted videos, screenshots, and duplicates.
- Delete offline entertainment.
- Uninstall unused apps.
- Review large message attachments.
- Clear temporary files using built-in tools.
- Move important files to safe storage.
- Restart the device.
- Check the available space again.
Remove a small number of items at a time and check the storage after each step. You may not need to delete as much as you think.
