⚡ What to Do When You Miss a Bus, Train, or Stop

Missing a bus, train, transfer, or stop can be frustrating, but it is usually a problem you can solve.

Do not rush into traffic or board another vehicle without checking where it is going. Move somewhere safe, confirm your location, and decide on your next step.

1. Move Somewhere Safe

If you missed a bus or train:

  • Step away from the road or platform edge.
  • Wait in a well-lit public area.
  • Stay near other passengers or employees.
  • Protect yourself from dangerous weather.
  • Do not run after the vehicle.
  • Do not cross train tracks.
  • Do not enter a restricted area.

If you missed your stop while still aboard:

  • Stay seated or hold on securely.
  • Wait for the next approved stop.
  • Do not force the doors open.
  • Do not ask the driver to stop somewhere unsafe.

Being late is better than trying to correct the mistake dangerously.

2. Confirm Your Location

Look for:

  • Street signs
  • Bus-stop number
  • Station or platform name
  • Nearby business
  • Building address
  • Landmark
  • Location shown in a map or transit app

Write down or screenshot:

  • Current location
  • Current time
  • Route or train number
  • Direction of travel
  • Destination
  • Transfer you were supposed to make

Map locations can be inaccurate, especially underground. Confirm the location with a sign or address when possible.

3. Figure Out What Happened

Ask yourself:

  • Did I arrive after the vehicle left?
  • Am I at the wrong stop or platform?
  • Did I miss a transfer?
  • Am I traveling in the wrong direction?
  • Did I board the wrong route?
  • Did I pass my destination?
  • Did I get off too early?
  • Was my stop skipped or closed?

Knowing what happened will help you choose the correct solution.

4. If You Missed the Bus or Train

Check when the next one will arrive.

Use:

  • Official transit app
  • Transportation provider’s website
  • Posted schedule
  • Station display
  • Service alerts
  • Customer service
  • Transit employee

Confirm that you are:

  • At the correct stop
  • Using the correct platform
  • Waiting for the correct route
  • Traveling in the correct direction
  • Looking at the correct day’s schedule

Then decide whether to:

  • Wait for the next vehicle
  • Use another route
  • Walk to a nearby stop
  • Take a taxi or rideshare
  • Call someone you trust
  • Reschedule the trip

Do not leave until you confirm that the alternative route is operating.

5. If You Missed a Transfer

Check:

  1. When the next connection will arrive.
  2. Whether another route reaches the destination.
  3. Whether your current vehicle continues somewhere useful.
  4. Whether your ticket or transfer remains valid.
  5. Whether another fare is required.
  6. Whether you will miss another connection.

For an intercity bus or train, speak with an employee before purchasing a replacement ticket. The company may be able to rebook you.

6. If You Missed Your Bus Stop

  1. Request the next available stop.
  2. Wait for the bus to stop completely.
  3. Exit in the approved location.
  4. Move away from traffic.
  5. Confirm where you are.
  6. Check whether you should walk back or take a return bus.

Ask the driver:

I missed my stop at Main Street. Where is the safest place to get off and take a bus back?

Do not distract the driver during a turn or difficult traffic situation.

7. If You Missed Your Train or Subway Stop

Get off at the next scheduled station.

Then:

  1. Confirm the station name.
  2. Follow signs for the opposite direction.
  3. Check that the return train stops at your destination.
  4. Find the correct platform.
  5. Ask an employee if you are unsure.

Before exiting the station, ask whether leaving will require another fare.

Do not hold the doors open or attempt to exit between stations.

8. If You Are Traveling in the Wrong Direction

Get off at the next safe stop or station.

Then:

  • Find the same route traveling in the opposite direction.
  • Check the destination shown on the vehicle or platform.
  • Confirm the next departure time.
  • Check whether another fare is required.

The opposite-direction bus stop may be across the street, around a corner, or several blocks away.

9. If You Boarded the Wrong Route

Before exiting, ask:

I’m trying to get to Central Avenue. Is there a safe stop where I can transfer to the correct route?

The wrong route may still connect with one that reaches your destination.

After exiting:

  • Record the stop name.
  • Check the correct route.
  • Find the boarding location.
  • Confirm the direction.
  • Check the arrival time.

Do not remain aboard based only on a guess.

10. If You Got Off Too Early

Check how far you are from the destination.

You may be able to:

  • Walk the remaining distance
  • Wait for the next vehicle
  • Take another route
  • Call for a ride

Before walking, consider:

  • Distance
  • Sidewalks
  • Traffic
  • Weather
  • Lighting
  • Accessibility
  • What you are carrying

Do not walk along highways, train tracks, tunnels, or restricted areas.

11. Notify Anyone Waiting for You

Send a short update:

I missed my bus, but the next one should arrive in about 15 minutes. I expect to be a little late.

If you do not know when you will arrive:

I missed my stop and am checking the return route. I’ll update you when I know my new arrival time.

For an appointment:

I missed my train connection and may arrive about 20 minutes late. Should I still come, or should we reschedule?

Do not promise an exact arrival time until you confirm the new route.

12. Ask for Help

Good people to ask include:

  • Bus driver
  • Train conductor
  • Station employee
  • Information-desk employee
  • Transit police officer
  • Security officer
  • Customer-service representative
  • Trusted family member or friend

Say:

I’m trying to get to 125 Main Street, but I missed my stop. Can you help me find the safest route from here?

Ask follow-up questions if needed:

Do I need to cross the street?

What is the name of the stop?

Which platform do I need?

Will I have to pay another fare?

13. Protect Your Phone Battery

  • Turn on battery-saver mode.
  • Lower the screen brightness.
  • Close unused apps.
  • Screenshot the new directions.
  • Avoid streaming video.
  • Use a portable charger if available.
  • Write down important information.

Stop somewhere safe before concentrating on your phone.

14. Avoid Unsafe Shortcuts

Do not:

  • Run into traffic
  • Cross train tracks
  • Enter a tunnel
  • Hold train doors open
  • Exit a moving vehicle
  • Walk along a highway
  • Accept an unrequested ride
  • Follow an isolated shortcut
  • Board another vehicle without checking its destination

15. Know When to Stop the Trip

Consider returning home or rescheduling if:

  • You would arrive after the appointment or event ends.
  • The last return trip has already left.
  • You cannot identify a safe route.
  • Weather is becoming dangerous.
  • Your phone battery is almost dead.
  • You cannot afford the available options.
  • You need medication or support you do not have.
  • You feel unsafe or overwhelmed.

Move to a safe public place and contact someone you trust. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger.
